The American Musicological Society and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame collaborate on a lecture series that brings scholarly work to a broader audience and showcases the musicological work of the top scholars in the field.

Our fall lecture will feature presentations by a musicologist:

Theo Cateforis (Syracuse University), “Soft/Loud"

About the Program

Join Dr. Theo Cateforis as he lectures on the novel twist to songwriting form ushered in by alternative rock in the 1990s.  Often referred to as the “soft/loud” it became one of the genre's and era’s strongest sonic markers. Laying out the history of songwriting form, Cateforis will consider some possible pre-cursors of the soft/loud song form, from the classic rock of the 1960s and 1970s to the power ballads of the 1980s, as points of comparison, while noting the significant differences the song form assumed in the 1990s.  The American Musicological Society and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (RRHOF) in Cleveland, Ohio, collaborate on a lecture series that brings scholarly work to a broader audience and showcases the musicological work of the top scholars in the field.  The AMS / Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Lectures provide a public forum that brings music research to a broader audience. 

About the Presenter

Cateforis

Dr. Theo Cateforis

 

Theo Cateforis is Associate Professor of Music History and Cultures at Syracuse University. He is the author of Are We Not New Wave? Modern Pop at the Turn of the 1980s (2011, University of Michigan Press) and editor of The Rock History Reader, now in its 3rd edition (2019, Routledge Press). He has also written about post-punk, math rock, riot grrrl, and indie rock. He is currently at work on a book tentatively titled Alternative to What? Mainstreaming the Margins in 1990s Rock.
