Booker T. & the MG's surgieron de un par de amistades de la infancia en Memphis. El guitarrista Steve Cropper (nacido el 21 de octubre de 1942) y el bajista Donald "Duck" Dunn (nacido el 24 de noviembre de 1941) asistieron a la Messick High School y tocaron juntos en una banda de R&B totalmente blanca llamada Royal Spades.
Al otro lado de la ciudad, el batería Al Jackson, Jr. (nacido el 27 de noviembre de 1934) y el bajista Lewis Steinberg (nacido el 13 de septiembre de 1933) eran habituales de la banda negra del Plantation Inn.
En 1960, Stax Records y su tienda de discos afiliada acababan de abrir en East McLemore Avenue. Steve Cropper era empleado de la tienda de discos y ayudante de ingeniero de estudio. Uno de los clientes habituales de Steve era Booker T. Jones (nacido el 11 de diciembre de 1944), de dieciséis años, que ya era un consumado teclista y trompetista.
Booker T. and the MGs were the foundation of what was to become known as the Memphis sound.
