Como los Cuatro Halcones a finales de 1950/principios de 1951, el grupo vocal estaba formado inicialmente por los cantantes principales Henry Booth y Charles Sutton, los vocalistas de armonía Lawson Smith y Sonny Woods, y el guitarrista Alonzo Tucker. El grupo, que era un sólido acto en vivo muy similar a los sedosos Orioles, cambió su nombre por el de Royals y fue contratado por Federal Records en 1952 por Johnny Otis. Sin embargo, no se distinguió hasta que Hank Ballard sustituyó a Smith en 1953.
