Durante un tiempo, a principios de los ochenta, a veces parecía que nada en el mundo de la música era tan importante como R.E.M. Quizás incluso fuera del mundo de la música, también.
Esto fue mucho antes de que la banda disfrutara de álbumes millonarios, grandes éxitos radiofónicos y vídeos rompedores. La devoción por R.E.M. era mucho menos clínica y mucho más íntima que esas medidas cuantitativas.
De hecho, durante años parecía que todos los que amaban la música de R.E.M.había conocido personalmente a los miembros de la banda o, al menos, los había visto actuar en los sucios clubes de new-wave y en los agujeros en la pared en los que la banda tocaba sin cesar.
