I met him in 1973. He was instantly memorable. Irving Azoff was a lit firecracker with a bowl-cut hairstyle, a mischievous smile, a restless sense of fun, and a mind reeling with the most entertaining ways imaginable to subvert authority. He was then the fledgling manager of Joe Walsh, but was already infamous in the musical community as the guy who would do anything – with glee – to protect and champion his artists.
