Nacido en 1930 en Middleton, Tennessee, Jim Steward se inició en el negocio de la música como violinista country a tiempo parcial. Reconociendo sus limitaciones como músico, Stewart pasó a fundar la discográfica que estaría a la cabeza de la revolución de la música soul.
Tras fundar Satellite Records a finales de la década de 1950, Stewart -residente de Memphis desde hacía mucho tiempo- convenció a su hermana Estelle Axton para que pidiera una segunda hipoteca sobre su casa para financiar un sello inspirado en el éxito de Sam Phillips en Sun Records.
