Introduction
Nirvana accidentally kicked off a cultural revolution with 1991's Nevermind, an album that brought rock & roll kicking and screaming into the modern world.
The Seattle trio disdained the kind of bloated, corporate music that was then dominating the airwaves; as a result, their approach was raw, punk-inspired and messy, and fueled by an underlying desire to ignore (and subvert) the status quo. Nirvana expressed angst, ennui and frustration through their music—but made sure to deliver plenty of catharsis as well.

Esto es lo que el cantante y guitarrista de Nirvana, Kurt Cobain, pensaba de los honores institucionales en el rock & roll: Cuando su banda fue fotografiada para la portada de Rolling Stone por primera vez, a principios de 1992, llegó con una camiseta blanca en la que había escrito, con rotulador negro, "las revistas corporativas todavía apestan".
El eslogan era su vuelta a uno acuñado por la marca de punk-rock SST: "El rock corporativo todavía apesta". El fotógrafo Mark Seliger recordaría más tarde la sesión fotográfica, organizada a toda prisa, que tuvo lugar en el arcén de una carretera durante una maníaca gira por Australia: "Le dije a Kurt: 'Creo que es una camiseta estupenda... pero hagamos un par de fotos con y sin ella'. Kurt dijo: 'No, no voy a quitarme la camiseta'"
