William "Smokey" Robinson es un hombre cuya obra es sinónimo de amor -amor eterno, amor no correspondido, amor apasionado- y cuyo nombre es sinónimo de Motown Records, como líder de los Miracles, como artista en solitario, como compositor, como productor y, junto con Berry Gordy Jr, como padre fundador de la compañía.
De hecho, fue "Shop Around" de los Miracles lo que estableció el sello Tamla de Motown. Después de alquilar singles anteriores a sellos más grandes para su distribución, Gordy decidió hacerlo él mismo en 1959 con "Way Over There" de los Miracles, que tuvo un éxito modesto, vendiendo 60.000 discos.
